A Birth Doula is a trained companion who supports a birthing person during labor and birth, through continuous one-on-one care. A doula provides information, physical, emotional, and mental support to the birthing person and to the partner.
Support is unconditional listening, guiding, focus on you. Doulas are here to help you discover your own strength, empower you by helping you discover how you can help yourself. We do not rescue, we do not leave you vulnerable.
Physical support may include: Applying warmth or cold, creating a calm environment, soothing touch through use of counter pressure, massage, or a rebozo, assistance with position and movement, giving food and drinks as wanted. Physical support helps you maintain a sense of control, comfort, and confidence.
Verbal messages of encouragement, reassurance, and praise. Helping you feel positive about situations. My continual presence. Mirroring you and calmly describing what you are experiencing. Helping you and your partner work through fears and self-doubt. Processing the experience.
What is Mental Support?
Providing information about evidence-based options. Guiding you and your partner through labor, suggesting techniques such as breathing, relaxation, movement, positioning. Facilitating good communication between you and your care provider. Amplifying your voice with tactful and respectful communication with your care providers if necessary. Creating space and time for you to make informed decisions without feeling pressured.
What is NOT Doula Support?
Doulas are not medical professionals. We do not perform any clinical tasks, give medical advice or diagnose any conditions. We do not take over the role of your partner, make decisions for you, do not pressure you, do not catch the baby.
